Timeline of the history of Gibraltar

Gibraltar has a history stretching over five hundred years. Humans have inhabited the land for at least 20,000 years, and in the Middle Ages, the territory came under the rule of the Moors and, later, the Spaniards. The islands became incorporated into the United Kingdom in 1713, and since then, ownership of the territory has been a matter of controversy, partly due to its strategic position. Spain still lays claim to Gibraltar to this day.
