It is located in the province of Oulu and is part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 2,541 (31 March 2025) and covers an area of 503.19 square kilometres (194.28 sq mi) of which 28.81 km2 (11.12 sq mi) is water. The population density is 5.36 inhabitants per square kilometre (13.9/sq mi).
