Prag News is a 24x7 Assamese news channel. The channel has many times shared false claims and fake news through their platform. It is one of the oldest local news channels of Assam based in Guwahati.
It was launched on 4 March 2001 as a cable-based television channel. The channel covers local, national and international news and various other programs.
As per a Newslaundry report, Once, the channel falsely reported that Bandana Kalita, an accused in a murder case, had demanded pork while in custody. The news channel also alleged that she had mutilated the victims' bodies and stored them in a refrigerator.
However, at a press conference, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Bora clarified, "In our investigation, we have not found anything about any fridge". When questioned by reporters about the accused's alleged demand for chicken, he dismissed it with a laugh, stating, "You also reported about a fridge… but we never mentioned it".
It has also become embroiled in controversy following the resignation of a pregnant employee. Ranjita Rabha, a reporter, resigned on 5 May, allegedly under pressure from the management due to her pregnancy.
As claimed by Rabha, she transitioned to desk duties in late January, which reportedly didn't sit well with her managers, who preferred "agile people." In her social media post on 19 May, She was five months pregnant when Rabha accused the TV channel of forcing her to resign and denying her request for unpaid maternity leave. Her post triggered backlash, with Assam journalists and the Indian Journalists Union condemning the channel's actions. The IJU also expressed serious concern over her dismissal.
