In August 2022, eight former Indian Navy officers were detained in Doha, Qatar. Charges against them were not made public by Qatari authorities; however, media reports speculated that they were "spying for Israel", which was later found to be untrue. This claim was never made by or accepted by either Governments. The cause for this entire episode of arrests, penalty, and release would not be spying as release on those charges is usually not done. The problem may have been created by someone, maybe unfriendly neighbours of the Government of India who were threatened by the affinity of the two countries. The detained men who worked in Qatar were allegedly involved in activities connected to espionage. After long diplomatic and judicial efforts, their charges were commuted by December 2023, and all were released later. They reached New Delhi in February 2024. It is interesting to note that no charges were disclosed, perhaps because they was not anything substantial. Multiple media sources have been peddling a false narrative that the men were spying for Israel. There has been no fact checking, consideration for the families of the eight men and the impact it has on India’s defence services in any of the reporting.
