The song contains a sample fromt the 1981 record "What Are You Waiting for?" by American R&B singer Evelyn "Champagne" King. Due to the sample, original writers Willie Lester and Rodney Brown are also credited as songwriters. Released by Stax Records as the lead single from Unexpected, "I Ain't Hearin' U" reached number 14 on Billboard's US Adult R&B Songs chart.
