In early 2025, there was a malaria outbreak in northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), although the cause of the disease was initially unidentified. The outbreaks, which affected multiple villages in the Province of Équateur and have so far resulted in at least 1,000 cases and at least 60 fatalities, were marked by rapid progression from symptom onset to death.
