The 1984 Syrian coup attempt refers to the events in March during which Rifaat al-Assad unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow his brother, Syrian President Hafez al-Assad. During these events, tens of thousands of soldiers with armored vehicles (some supported Rifaat, some supported Hafez) gathered in the capital Damascus and were on the verge of military clashes (which did not happen).
