A submachine gun is a magazine-fed, lightweight, short-barreled automatic firearm which fires pistol cartridges. Compared to heavier weapons such as assault rifles, submachine guns are significantly easier to control and are more useful in close-quarters environments. Some submachine guns, such as the Uzi are so lightweight and lacking recoil that they can be used in one hand.
