Hoshi no Tama (3.5e Equipment)

Hoshi no Tama: A hoshi no tama or star jewel looks like a small orb that glows like faerie fire, shedding light as a candle. It grants a kitsune the ability to assume his fox form as a standard action. The kitsune can revert back to his humanoid form as a free action. Using the hoshi no tama is a supernatural ability that will only work for the kitsune who owns the jewel. When in fox form the kitsune’s type changes to magical beast (kitsune, shapeshiter). A kitsune with the Kyuubi no Kami feat (see Silver Kitsune) will remain as an ousider (native, kitsune, shapeshifter) while in fox form. The kitsune can only reach higher forms if he both has the right number of tails and his hoshi no tama can support them. For example a three-tailed kitsune with a two-tails hoshi no tama can only assume a two-tailed form.

If someone is able to steal a kitsune's hoshi no tama they can cast a Geas/Quest against that kitsune which he cannot resist. Once completed, the kitsune can demand for his hoshi no tama back or invoke Inari to send a servant to deliver divine punishment. The servant is usually a level 20 Kitsune Paragon].

While in fox form the kitsune assumes the form of a large (or bigger) fox and all his equipment melds with his new form but still provide their magical benefits. You do however, loose the non-magical bonus from any armor or shield when assuming fox form. Due to this, the kitsune will no longer be affected by any armor penalty or arcane spell failure while in fox form. In this form, the kitsune cannot use any magic items unless if they are worn or held in his hands before changing forms. For example, you can’t use your wand of fireball if it was inside your bag before assuming fox form. Potions and other similar items remain melded into his new form and thus remain unavailable for use.

The kitsune can cast spells in this form. Any expensive material components must be available to the kitsune before changing forms or held in one of his tails to cast the spell in fox form. The kitsune can deliver touch spells with one of his tails. On a miss, or if he plans to hold the charge of a spell he can later on discharge the spell with a successful melee touch attack using his tail or a normal natural attack (both bite or tail slap), which deals normal damage and releases the spell at the same time. For example, on the 1st round a kitsune casts vampiric touch using his tail to deliver the touch attack and misses. Next round, he can do a full attack, bite + tail slaps and if one of them hits the vampiric touch spell comes into play along with the normal attack damage. Also note, that if a spellcaster attempts to cast a new spell while holding a touch attack charge, the first spell fizzles out and becomes wasted.

The reach value listed in parenthesis is the range of his tail slap if the kitsune possess the A Fox’s Long Tail feat. A kitsune with either the A Fox's Claws or Improved Fox's Tail feat also gains the capability to overcome damage reduction when in fox form. At 6th, level your natural attacks are treated as magical weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. At 11th level, your natural attacks gain an alignment based on one of your alignments for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. At 16th level, your natural attacks are treated as chosen special material for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. By 21st level, your natural attacks are considered epic for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Note: A kitsune using his hoshi no tama gain an increase to his CR value by 1 + 1 for every three tails (max CR +4). For example a 17th level kitsune wizard that is using a nine-tailed hoshi no tama has a CR of 22 (class levels CR +17, kitsune CR +1, hoshi no tama CR +4).
