Half-Dragon (5e Race)

Half-Dragons

“I know everything, you see”, the old voice wheedled. “The beginning, the present, the end. Everything. You now, you see the past and the present, like other low creatures: no higher faculties than memory and perception. But dragons, my boy, have a whole different kind of mind.” He stretched his mouth in a kind of smile, no trace of pleasure in it. “We are from the mountaintop: all time, all space. We see in one instant the passionate vision and the blowout.”
—John Gardner, Grendel

Physical Description

At a distance, half-dragons are often confused with a human or elf, but as the viewer draws closer the differences become wildly apparent. Scales run along their cheeks, neck, up and down their arms and legs, and back. Some may have small horns on their heads, while others may posses a tail that reaches down towards their ankles; few may have both. Slitted eyes and forward-facing, pointed ears complete their draconic appearance.

History

In some cultures, half-dragons have been seen as creatures blessed by the gods, while in others they’re treated as abominations of natural law. Because of this, they may be surprised by the positive or negative attitude towards them when entering a new town. Half-dragons are incapable of having natural born offspring, leading to the race being incredibly rare in nearly all regions of the world.

Throughout history, half-dragons become trusted sages sought far and wide for their extensive knowledge, while others may become vicious mercenaries feared throughout the countryside. Though many become wanderers searching for many different things, most often their draconic parent, an adventuring life comes as the next logical step to finding what they're looking for.

Half-Dragon Names

Half-dragons usually adopt the naming scheme of their parent's society. On rare occasions, they may also have a draconic name either as their only name or nickname.

Half-Dragon Traits

The spawn of Dragon and of Man.
Ability Score Increase. When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. You can't raise any of your scores above 20.
Age. Half-dragons reach maturity after approximately 20 years. After reaching adulthood, their aging slows dramatically and lifespans range from hundreds to thousands of years.
Alignment. Half-dragons often vary wildly in alignment, but many retain the chaotic nature that rests in their blood. Very few Half-dragons are known to follow laws of any creature, instead opting to craft a personal code over a period of many decades. Such code is rarely ever broken.
Size. Half-dragons range from 5 to 7 feet tall, often rivaling Dragonborn. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Keen Senses. You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Relentless Endurance. When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. You can’t use this feature again until you finish a long rest.
Breath Weapon. You can use your bonus action to exhale destructive energy. It deals damage in an area according to your ancestry. When you use your breath weapon, all creatures in the area must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your ancestry. The DC of this saving throw is 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increase to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th, and 5d6 at 16th level. After using your breath weapon, you cannot use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
Draconic Resistance. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common, and Draconic.
