Dowsing Rod (5e Equipment)

Rod, common

Sometimes referred to as a divining rod, dowsing rods enable their user to locate a specific resource in the world around them. Traditional dowsing rods were constructed from a Y shaped branch which would, when grasped by the two splayed ends, tug towards the nearest source of water. Since their inception, dowsing rods have been constructed from a variety of materials in the hopes of divining for other, more sought-after resources such as precious metals and gemstones. As one may imagine, fraud among such an already-dubious invention is incredibly common, with magical dowsing rods being among the few that actually function, with those constructed by dwarves and gnomes being among the most accurate.

While wielding a dowsing rod, it automatically points in the direction of the largest source of a resource within 10 miles dictated by its constructed material, as chosen by the DM or by rolling a d8 using the following table.

RollMaterial - Resource
1Oak - Water
2Gold - Gold
3Rowan - Gemstones
4Silver - Undead Creatures
5Mithril - Fiend, Aberration, or Undead Creatures
6Adamantine - Dragon, Celestial, or Elemental Creatures
7Cold Iron - Fey, Giant, or Ooze Creatures
