Different Materials (Grisaire Supplement)

Materials used to construct things are often glossed over in 5e save for certain exceptions. To better simulate the differences in certain things, the following tables are meant to bring some complexity to how different things work based on what they are made of and also how they are made.

Metals, Special

The following special metals can be incorporated into the Grisaire world below. They typically are the rare sorts that are linked with magical or pseudo-magical effects. Some of the names are taken from official named metals in DnD, but have been reworked to fit within this setting.

Special Metals
Metal Description Uses and Effects
AdamantineA popular and legendary substance made from ores of adamantite, which are extremely rare and valuable
MithralA light, durable metal often prized for its ability to make armor both tough and light
MeteoriteAlso known romantically as "starsteel," meteorite is a
ChardalynThis dark material looks like obsidian on a glance, but is extremely brittle. It was originally useless until the Polf'nyet clan of dwarves figured out how to smelt and treat it to become usable to make trinkets and jewelry. This material is found only at the very northern edges of Premius where frigid highlands line the coast before the northernmost Wallow.
DarksteelAlso known simply as "dwarven steel,"
Cold IronThis specially mined ore originates only within the deepest mines of certain places in the world, like Hagai and the Frozen Wastes. It is known for being particularly potent as a weapon against fey creatures and fey-descendants.
DlarunA special creation known only to halflings, this metal is known to ward off effects of illusion. It appears deceptively like ivory.
ArandurThis metal is unique in its forge process, utilizing the blood of dragons to ensure it never loses a keen edge when made into a weapon. It appears as a bluish green metal with glassy specks.
TruesteelThis very luminous white metal appears almost like ivory. It is allegedly known to be wielded only by select gods themselves. As such, no one is sure this metal actually exists. According to legend, it was a material first found by the goddess Ongana. It was then forged by Manus Infinitum at the behest of Ongana, who observed its lethal properties against undead and fiends alike.
DeepsteelKnown as "hizagkuur" to the dwarves who invented it, deepsteel is an extremely rare and laborious metal to create, as it uses nothing more than mud of all things. Its final form was too unwieldy to be fashioned into any armor or weapon, and thus is usually used to make vaults due to its reflective properties. It looks like black metal with brownish streaks.
Infernal IronCalled "soulsteel" by some, infernal iron is a concoction created by devils. It entails using the essence from souls to infuse into metal, giving it a keen edge that can damage creatures from the ethereal planes, like ghosts, as well as elementals.
MolybdenumA shiny, graphite-like metal, molybdenum has little value in and of itself. However, it is absolutely necessary in the alloy-making process for precious metals like adamantine and mithral, thus making it also vital. Without this metal, adamantine and mithral forged tend to be less wieldy.
BloodmetalThis toxic metal is illegal following the passage of various laws post-March of Gears. Bloodmetal is usually created to fight a specific race of creature, and seems to be limited to humanoids. The names of bloodmetal changes based on what blood it was treated with during its creation. For example, bloodmetal treated with human blood is called maneater, while bloodmetal treated with orc blood is called orcslayer. Bloodmetal by appearance is difficult to distinguish from typical steel in color. However, one can usually tell because of the telltale patterns on the metal that result from its forging, which resemble rivulets or "splashing." As such, another name for bloodmetal is flowsteel.
TanthorjaleAn extremely rare metal known only to fiends, usually devils
TelstangKnown also as "trusty metal," this silvery material is able to ward off enchanting effects that change one's shape or form.
Phase IronSometimes called "zarzadil", this special metal is known to have spatial distortion properties that allow it to pass through things, hence "phase."
LifemetalKnown among metal connoisseurs as "illithium", lifemetal is a material known for being unable to be soiled and thus always appearing clean. Its color is silver, but with a slight cyan and magenta hue to the lighting. Lifemetal is also rumored to be a very good choice of metal for building fortifications against undead, because it is allegedly made of similar material to a mace of disruption. However, this has yet to be proven in any degree
