You Won't Be Alone

You Won't Be Alone is a Macedonian-language horror drama film released in 2022. It was written and directed by Goran Stolevski.
The story is set in 19th century Macedonia and follows Nevena, a girl who is transformed into a shapeshifting witch on her sixteenth birthday after living in isolation since she was a baby. Maria, the witch who transformed Nevena, takes her to teach her witchcraft. However, Nevena angers Maria with her playful nature and she decides to live among humans, who Maria said would kill her. Nevena, mute from Maria's curse and clueless about human society from her life of isolation, struggles to fit into a nearby village.
Tropes used in You Won't Be Alone include:
- Accidental Murder: Nevena accidentally stabs and kills Bosilka with her claws when Bosilka tries to get Nevena away from her baby. When Nevena is in Bosilka's form and Bosilka's abusive husband tries to have sex with her, Nevena gets scared and kills him in the same way.
- Animorphism: The power used most often by the witches is to turn into other animals (including humans) by putting the animals' organs inside their chests.
- Maria takes the form of an eagle, Nevena's mother, and a wolf.
- Nevena transforms into several villagers and a dog.
- Burn the Witch: Maria was burned at the stake after being discovered to be a witch, but the fire completed the witch transformation spell and Maria survived. Maria later warns Nevena that the humans will kill her for being a witch too.
- Dead Person Impersonation: The witches can take the form of a dead person by inserting the dead person's organs into their chest cavity. Nevena spends most of the film in the forms of several dead villagers to try to fit into their society, although Nevena's muteness and life of social isolation make that difficult.
- Domestic Abuse: Nevena takes the form of Bosilka, a woman who is regularly beaten by her husband. The other villagers then believe that the beatings are the cause of Bosilka's sudden change in behavior.
- Gender Bender: Nevena kills and takes the shape of Boris, a young man, and lives as him for a while.
- Kill and Replace: The witches have the power to take the form of dead people. Nevena kills a woman and tries to fit into the village in her form. She later kills a young man and tries again as him.
- Narrator: Many scenes are accompanied by the mute Nevena narrating her thoughts.
- No Social Skills: As Nevena spent most of her life alone in a cave, she doesn't know how to socialize. When in the forms of Bosilka and Boris, Nevena doesn't know how to properly express emotions or behave, leading other villagers to believe they have gone mad or become possessed.
- Slashed Throat: At the end of the film, Maria tries to kill Nevena's infant daughter by slitting her throat.
- Wicked Witch: Maria is a witch who hates humans for how they've treated her. She attempts to kill Nevena and Nevena's daughter and is implied to have killed Nevena's husband.
- Would Hurt a Child: Maria, who gains power from drinking blood, wants to drink Nevena's blood when she was a baby. At the end of the film, Maria attempts to kill Nevena's daughter out of jealousy.
- Wound That Will Not Heal: When the villagers attempt to burn Maria to death, Maria's transformation into a witch is complete, allowing her to survive. However, the fire permanently burned her skin before the ritual is completed, preventing her skin from healing.
