TyranoBuilder

The TyranoBuilder logo

TyranoBuilder is a game engine for creating Visual Novel games by STRIKEWORKS, distributed by Nyu Media. It was created to be simple use so authors quickly make visual novels without experience in scripting or typical programming. Instead the engine focuses on visual programming, allowing creators to drag and drop elements graphically to control the operation of their game, lowing the learning curve significantly.

The editor software runs on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. It can export visual novels to be played on Windows, Mac OS, and as an HTML page directly. The creators note that export to Android and iOS is also possible with additional 3rd party software.

Has a website here, and a Steam page here. It was released on Steam in 2015. The software costs money, though the amount charged is low for a non-free game engine, costing $15 as of 2025. The engine FAQ claims that games built on TyrannoBuilder can be sold commercially without royalties.

Compare and contrast with Ren'Py an open source and more technical competitor in the Visual Novel space.

Tropes used in TyranoBuilder include:
  • Game Maker: For Visual Novels specifically.
  • Mascot: The girl in the dinosaur suit as seen in the logo.
  • Microtransactions: Several additional features to the engine, such as more scene transitions, or GUI assets, though purchasing all the packs is relatively affordable compared to many game engines with this model.
  • Multi-Platform: The engine editor itself runs on Windows and Mac OS, and the engine can export visual novels to Windows, Mac OS, and Web. With additional tooling it can export to Android and iOS as well.
  • Speech Bubbles: Supported by the engine, as outlined in the documentation here.
  • Super-Deformed: The style the mascot is drawn in.
  • Tyrannosaurus Rex: Referenced in the name and logo.
