Tick, tick... BOOM! (film)/Tear Jerker

WARNING! There are unmarked Spoilers ahead. Beware.

Tear Jerkers in Tick, tick... BOOM! (film) include:

  • The opening archival footage shows Anthony Rapp on the Rent premiere night saying, "We dedicate this performance and every performance to our friend Jonathan Larson." Followed by a close-up of his family tearfully applauding. Just in case you're not sure that this story will be an emotional ride.
  • Freddie ends up in the hospital, despite planning to do a performance gig on an Alaskan cruise while HIV-positive. Carolyn is close to tears when relaying the news to Jon, who attempts to cheer her up by saying he's too stubborn to die. Jon feels helpless as he monologues to the present-day audience that he would storm out and go visit Freddie in the hospital... but he's on the Sunday brunch shift.
  • Michael and Jon's fight after Jon makes fun of the review group and sabotages his chances. Jon jokes that he can lie he had a stroke, and says it's no big deal. Michael screams at him for taking life for granted and thinking that wanting a nicer life is selling out when Michael is a gay man, meaning that half of the United States hates him and he can't ever get married or have kids.
  • Jon's breakdown in Michael's office after Rosa tells him that no investor wanted to take a risk on Superbia. Michael snaps him out of it by revealing that he's HIV-positive, and has known for a few days. He says that he may get lucky. Jon gets a Jerkass Realization as Michael tells him he can't talk about it now and has to answer a phone call.
  • "Real Life": Michael breaks down while singing in the privacy of his office, as it sinks in that he has HIV, and that his time may run out soon.
  • Jon in life didn't achieve the theatre success that he wanted until the very end. As Susan narrates, that big break came when he wrote Rent. Before the premiere, however, Jon's heart gave out to an aortic rupture. He didn't see the success that Rent would become.
  • Freddie, Jon's friend who was diagnosed with HIV and hospitalized, is alive at the end of the movie. He and Carolyn are attending Jon's three-man show.
