The Giving Tree/YMMV

  • Glurge: You should let your children take everything until there is nothing left of yourself.
  • Tear Jerker: In spite of attempts to make the story seem ominous or creepy, it's a marvelously touching portrayal of the selflessness of unconditional love.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not Didactic?: Critics have debated since it was published just what the intended Aesop is; Some say it's about unconditional Christian love, some say it's about the nature of a parent's love for a child, some believe it is a critique on communism, some say it's about humanity's mistreatment of the environment... and some believe it has no moral at all, which would, in fact, fit the style of Silverstein's writing. To his credit, Silverstein himself has never confirmed nor denied anything.
