The founder of the project was "Stevie Lambert" AKA TheBurningPricess. The world of Taerel is a worldbuilding project written in a Wikipedia like style and its purpose is to make a world for others to read and enjoy.
A wiki cataloging the setting can be found here.
Backstory
Backstory wise, pretty much what happened was zu'aan (human like aliens), back in the Genetic Age (the height of their tech) messed around with genetic engineering trying to make super soldiers, and they ended up making vampires. These vampires (kin'toni is the settings' name for them) got out of the lab and went on a rampage, turning all zu'aan they came across. Their virus soon went global and turned most of the zu'aan.
Some zu'aan groups tried to use nukes to stop the outbreak, but that failed and many places became wastelands due to that. By hunting down the zu'aan so they had to form small tribes, they sent the tech of Taerel back to the stone age at worst, iron age at best. The year is 4E 500, after 915 years the world of Taerel, now inhabited by primtive tjribal humanoids and the bloodthirsty kin'toni is facing an encroaching ice age.
- Adaptive Ability: The kin'toni (vampires) have the power of Genetic Adaptation being to change their bodies to fit their environment. This has lead to such things as the flying Neluskskel Kin'toni Clan, the deep sea adapted Tiess Kin'toni Clan and the cave adapted (blind/albino) Minemi Kin'toni Clan.
- After the End: Basically, the Xerea zu'aan Empire had an empire and advanced tech, until they messed around with genetics and nanotech to make super soldiers, these vampire super soldiers broke out of the lab, and spread throughout the globe, turning all in their way. The setting of the Awakening Age and Twilight Age is after this outbreak.
- Alien Sky: Taerel has a strange sky with three moons, one on the West, one on the North and one on the East. This is stated in the Diwarale Kin'toni Clan's page.
- Alternative Calendar: Taerel's calendar uses both "Ages" (defined by first technology levels, then by events after the Awakening) and dates in the format of "XE XXXX". The number before the E is the era number, the number afterwards is the year number. Old, old work used Before Present Day (B.P.D) dates, running into the problem of "if the dates change each year, how do they write them down"
- Amazing Technicolor Population: Kin'toni often have strange skin colors, such as the grey of the Diwarale Kin'toni Clan, dark grey skin of the A'voreld Kin'toni Clan, yellow-grey/yellow-green skin of the Ibanhon Kin'toni Clan and the green skin of the Garzcer Kin'toni Clan.
- Apocalypse How: Class 2. Ever since the Awakening, and the fall of the Xerea empire, the world has gone back to the stone age at worst, and iron age at best. The main holdouts of civilization are the walled zu'aan cities.
- Bio Augmentation: Basically, the kin'toni are mutant vampire super-soldiers whose' powers are mutations off the body. There are clans who can survive underwater and clans who can fly.
- Bioluminescence Is Cool: Many regions, such as the Wosayum Glowshroom Bayou, Vuya Shadowy Forest,Caldar Mountain,Ustves Golden Fall Grove, Vizdrya Land of Lakes and the Nys'aw Cold Forest have glowing things. Seems thee writers love to make things glow.
- Cataclysm Backstory: The world's basic backstory, as stated in here is an Cataclysm Backstory, stating about how the world fell from grace due to the Awakening.
- Don't Go in The Woods: In the Torsh Dense Taiga Forest there is poisonous gas and many woodland and forest places have hostile zu'aan or kin'toni (vampire) inhabitants.
- Doorstopper: The wiki has 903 pages and 2,421,396 words. It would take a while to read all that to say the least. This is the size of a 24 book series, assuming 100k words a novel.
- Dying Race: As a race, both the zu'aan and kin'toni are dying out. The zu'aan due to their reckless wars with the kin'toni and each other, alongside things like starvation or sicknesses. The kin'toni have the same problem, but if they cannot turn new zu'aan, they cannot reproduce, meaning when they zu'aan die out, they will as well.
- Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Basically, the Xerea Empire is Taerel's version of the Roman Empire.
- Fantastic Racism: The kin'toni are known to the zu'aan as "monsters", "blood-sucking fiends" and "beasts". Aelain Tara, the first ruler of the Gar'leth Tribal zu'aan, waged war with Uron Drak and his host of kin'toni in 4E 30. Many such wars happen out of hatred.
- Festering Fungus: The most known festering fungus is that, that effects the Umvera Kin'toni Clan, a fungus that they worship, but slowly weakens them in time. This fungus grows from their wounds.
- Fungus Humongous: Taelt Fungal Jungle, Dynat Glowshroom Bayou and Wosayum Glowshroom Bayou are just some of the regions in the world of Taerel that have huge, tree sized mushrooms.
- Genetic Adaptation: The kin'toni have a form of malleable genetics that allow them to adapt to their environment, with such abilities as flight and living underwater. For example, the Ormad Kin'toni Clan adapted to the cold, being able to survive freezing temps, the Clael Kin'toni Clan have green, bark like skin as camouflage, and the Xfaxa Kin'toni Clan are blind, albino cave dwellers.
- Genetic Engineering Is the New Nuke: Seems like in Taerel, genetic engineering can do such things as making blood thirsty vampire supersoldiers. Sadly, this lead to the fall of the Xerea Empire who made said supersoldiers.
- Gone Horribly Right: The kin'toni project did work, and the Xerea Empire got their vampire supersoldiers, but they turned on their creators and started the vampire outbreak that lead to the fall of civilization.
- Grim Up North: The Shauren Iceplains is a good example of the Grim Up North, a barren wasteland inhabited by savage kin'toni (vampire) clans. It is never stated, about it being in the north, but the lore on the page implies so.
- LEGO Genetics: This is in full effect for the kin'toni, allowing for such things as winged flying kin'toni, cold resistant cold land kin'toni and heat resistant volcanic kin'toni. They mutate to adapt to their environment.
- Lost Technology: The world of Taerel was advanced and had such wonders as advanced genetic engineering and hydroponic farms. Due to the fall of the Xerea Empire and the other advanced nations of the Genetic Age and the hunting down of the zu'aan into small tribes, these wonders have been lost.
- Healing Factor: The kin'toni (vampires) can heal wounds a zu'aan cannot, to the point of growing back limbs and healing major burns.
- Horror Hunger: Kin'toni have a hunger for zu'aan blood but can survive on animal blood. This is part of what drives them to hunt down the zu'aan.
- Metamorphosis: becoming a kin'toni is a slow one way street, that cannot be reversed. It is a slow process that takes weeks, but leads to a trans sophont super soldier.
- Monster Progenitor: The kin'toni are broken into many warring clans, often lead or originally lead by the clan founder, who is the Progenitor of the clan. Such clans include: The Boughdyn Kin'toni Clan was founded by Velis Runtumu and the Invernus Kin'toni Clan, founded by Dyndra Norot.
- Mutants: The kin'toni are living vampire mutated zu'aan. They was mutated by the kin'toni virus, a pathogen that spreads through bites.
- Nanomachines: As stated in the kin'toni biology page, nanotechology was used to create the kin'toni, to the extent of one kin'toni dying when the nanobots in his blood turned on him.
- Nuclear Option: Many places was reduced to deserts and ruins due to nuclear weapons ("atomics" as the lore calls them) was used to try and fail to stop the kin'toni. Places redirected to ruins include the Swudra Wasteland and the Verny Barren Desert
- Our Vampires Are Different: The kin'toni are "living vampires" lacking many of the weaknesses of "traditional" undead vampires. Being a Sci-Fi setting lacking any form of supernatural elements, Taerel's vampires are explained by scientific means. Sure, they drink blood, and are superhuman and die in sunlight, but they also mutate to adapt to their evoments, leading to many different physically diverse clans.
- Pointy Ears: Pointy ears is such a common thing in this setting, the kin'toni and zu'aan both having pointed ears that it would be better to list aversions over played straight examples.
- Retcon: The setting of Taerel has had many, many recons in its history, such as the B.P.D dates being replaced with "XE XXX" dates, the Elder Scrolls stolen clan names being replaced with original names, the Shattering Age being renamed the Twilight Age and the Twilight age going from 250 years to 500 years.
- Scenery Gorn: The cities of the pre-Awakening Xerea zu'aan empire, along with other pre Awaking nations' buildings are now in ruins and overgrown. Some buildings are still strong enough to be lived in, such as an zu'aan city built in pre Awakening skyscrapers.
- Schizo-Tech: The world during the Age of Shattering is primitive, tech ranging from stone age to iron age. At the most, the advanced technology, such as one city's hydroponic farms is remnants of the old worlds' technology. Any advanced technology in the Twilight Age is artifacts left over from the Genetic Age.
- Sliding Scale of Vampire Friendliness: Taerel's vampires ("kin'toni") are in the middle to far end of the scale. There are peaceful clans and hostile clans. The kin'toni are hell-bent on turning any zu'aan they come across, but they are able to reason. There are some savage feral clans, but those are the exception rather than the norm.
- Shared Universe: The world background is written by multiple writers, a mixed of paid and volunteer (unpaid)
- Super Soldier: The kin'toni are mutant vampire super soldiers made to fight the Xerea Empires' wars, but sadly, they turned on their creators, kicking off the Awakening and the events afterwards.
- Super Strength: The kin'toni are much stronger than zu'aan due to changes in their biology. Such changes include "rapid cellular regeneration, stem cell rejuvenation and a mix of altered hormonal production and adrenaline stimulation.".
- Super Senses: The kin'toni - their sense are much better than a zu'aan's, with enhanced vision (hawk-like normal daytime vision, night vision), really good hearing, an ability to smell like an bloodhound and a hyper-accurate sense of balance and direction.
- Super Toughness: The kin'toni may not be unkillable, but they are still a lot tougher than a zu'aan. They are resistant to bullet hydrostatic shock, it having no immediate effects and they have leathey, fire resistant skin.
- Synthetic Plague: The kin'toni virus is an lab made virus, to make vampire super soldiers. It was created in the Genetic Age by the Xerea Empire.
- Transhuman: The kin'toni are trans-zu'aan (humanoid sophonts). Their superior biology grants them such powers as super strength, inhuman toughness, night vision, super senses and a healing factor.
- Technically Living Zombie: The kin'toni are Technically Living Vampires, being living beings that can be killed by many things that a human can be killed by.
- Viral Transformation: The kin'toni (vampires) spread via this way, with a virus transmitted via bite that within a few weeks turns the bitten into a kin'toni themselves, ready to spread the virus more.
- Vestigial Empire: Post kin'toni outbreak, the Xerea zu'aan Empire is this, being driven back to walled cities. They are a shadow of their former, advanced glory, having once ruled an large empire.
- Undeathly Pallor: Many kin'toni clans such as the Minemi Kin'toni Clan and the Xalather Kin'toni Clan are very very pale. There are averstions such as the Yergha Kin'toni Clan ehough.
- Weakened by the Light: Kin'toni are unable to survive long in sunlight, their bodies rejecting their own tissues. this leads to kin'toni doing their activities such as hunting during the night.
- Zombie Apocalypse: The world of Taerel is set after a vampire apocalypse, the Awakening Age being the first 415 years, and the Twilight age being the 500 years after the Awakening Age.
