Mike Wheeler

The younger brother of Nancy Wheeler. Among his friend group he had the best ability to work with Eleven in season one. He is friends with Lucas, Dustin, and Will.
- Nerd: Fairly nerdy, being into radio and tabletop gaming in the early 1980s.
- Wake Up, Go to School, Save the World: During the events of season one, he participated in school life while looking for Will.
Lucas Sinclair

A friend of Mike, Dustin, and Will. Compared to his friends, Lucas is somewhat more grounded in reality, and often takes the initiative.
- Black and Nerdy: Like his friends, he is into tabletop gaming and radio.
- Black Best Friend: To Mike Wheeler.
- Brats with Slingshots: He wields a wrist rocket at the end of season one.
- Wake Up, Go to School, Save the World: He participated in school events alongside the supernatural happenings of the show.
Dustin Henderson

A friend of Mike, Lucas, and Will. Dustin is somewhat awkward, and is bullied at school.
- Big Eater: The supplies he brought to prepare for an outing were snacks. He also leaves the gym to raid the pudding at school near the end of the first season.
- Socially Awkward Hero: Compared to his friends, Dustin isn’t smooth socially, and comes across as awkward. Unlike many examples, he still does have social skills - just expressed awkwardly.
- Nerd: Like his friends, he is into radio and tabletop games. Given his understanding of magnetism and other science topics, in addition to his awkwardness, he exemplifies the trope a little bit better than his friends.
- Wake Up, Go to School, Save the World: Participates in normal school life while investigating the weird occurrences around him.
Will Byers

A friend of Mike, Lucas, and Dustin. Early on in the first season he is trapped in a mysterious world, driving most of the plot that season.
- Nerd: Like his friends, he is into tabletop gaming.
Eleven

A child initially named Jane kidnapped by The Government and used for various experiments, including remote listening of the Soviets and attempting to make contact with otherworldly beings. After she escapes, she eventually meets the boys and helps them locate Will Byers.
- Affectionate Nickname: Eleven's friends often call her El.
- Psychic Powers: Eleven can move things with her mind and listen in on far off locations.
- Trademark Favorite Food: She likes Eggo waffles, to the point of stealing them as her exclusive food from the grocery store when she was on the run early on, and to the point where Jim buys them for her while she lives in his house.
- You Are Number Six: Eleven gets her name from the tattoo that was inked on her arm.
Nancy Wheeler

The older sister of Mike Wheeler. Her relationship with Barb independently helped drag her into the strange events ongoing in Hawkins. Often works with either Johnathan Byers or with Steve Harrington.
- Wake Up, Go to School, Save the World: Participates in social life while investigating the odd happenings in Hawkins.
Johnathan Byers

The older brother of Will Byers and son of Joyce Byers. A photographer who took his own initiative to find Will Byers, Nancy realized his photos of Barb were a lead on her disappearance, leading to the two forming a relationship.
- The Peeping Tom: Ended up photographing a party under cover of night, and is caught when another person sees him developing photos in the dark room, leading to him being accused of being one.
Steve Harrington

An on-off friend of Nancy Wheeler. He's more laid back and sociable than many others in her circle.
- Eighties Hair: Wears a bit of product, as he explains to Dustin.
Joyce Byers

The mother of Will Byers and Johnathan Byers.
- Mama Bear: Goes to bat hard for Will Byers when he goes missing in season one.
