Slipstream 5000 is an aerial Racing Game developed by The Software Refinery. It was released by Gremlin Interactive in 1995 for MS-DOS.
Slipstream involves racing any of ten Flying Cars around any or all of ten international racetracks, as part of a Twenty Minutes Into the Future sport where all top fliers become huge celebrities. Each car is nominally piloted by one or two such celebrities and decorated according to their look and brand - most of which play to some stereotype or other. The cars can be upgraded as play progresses.
Tropes used in Slipstream 5000 include:
- The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: Inverted with the control-reversing weapon - it always makes computer players veer off and crash, even in wide spaces where an average human player could ride it out.
- Eiffel Tower Effect: Played straight for most levels - the Norwegian track goes through fjords, the Egyptian through pyramids - but there's no sign of the actual Tower in France.
- I Broke a Nail: One of the racers, Veronica, says "Oh, I broke a nail." when her ship gets shot.
- Interface Screw: one of the weapons makes the victim's controls reverse for a short time (or until they crash). There's also a booby-trapped power-up with the same effect.
- Large Ham: All the characters have a few stock phrases appropriate to their personas, which they can be heard saying over the race-wide intercom. All of them are cheesy and some veer into ham territory.
- Wacky Racing: Futuristic cars piloted by hammy celebrities, with missiles.
