- Designated Hero: Most of the complaints about this movie come down to Oscar's portrayal as this.
- Designated Villain: Don Edward Lino and the sharks do more good than Oscar.
- Ensemble Darkhorse:
- Lola is very well-received due to her design, as well as Crazy Joe from being hilarious. Both characters are a couple by the epilogue.
- Also Sykes, whom even haters describe him as a scene stealer.
- Luca the Octopus is one due to how surprisingly natural his humor is. Schaffrillas Productions thought that Luca is one of his favorite characters.
- Esoteric Happy Ending:
- If the sharks make peace with the Southside Reef, does that mean they'll still terrorize other reefs?
- Also, Oscar would get arrested for making a profit out of lying.
- Evil Is Sexy: Aside from the Uncanny Valley features, Lola looks so beautiful despite being a villain.
- Friendly Fandoms: It has one with SpongeBob SquarePants because it has more in common with that than Finding Nemo.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Lenny, the Ambiguously Gay shark who wants to be a dolphin.

- Magnificent Bastard: Don Lino has his moments, owed mostly to Robert De Niro's voice acting for him in certain scenes.
- Memetic Mutation: A close-up of Sykes getting worried has been popular for reaction GIFs.
- Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: A number of Jamaicans like the jellyfish. It helps that Ziggy Marley voiced Ernie.
- Offending the Creator's Own: Ernie and Bernie are considered Jamaican stereotypes but their portrayals are accurate and are voiced by real Jamaicans.
- Rooting for the Empire: Many have found themselves rooting for the sharks and Lola due to being more interesting than the so-called "hero".
- The Scrappy: Oscar is a shallow unlikable jerk who isn't that much of a hero.
- So Bad It's Good: It gets everything wrong with a DreamWorks Animation movie, which makes it enjoyable.
- Spiritual Licensee: This is generally considered a kid-friendly Martin Scorsese film even though it isn't that good.
- Strangled by the Red String: There is no reason why Oscar and Angie should be together beyond the "best friends who fall in love" cliché, and even less so considering how Oscar acts throughout the movie.
- Take That, Scrappy!: Oscar was beaten and bruised by the jellyfish and Lola, which makes it surprisingly satisfying.
- Tainted by the Preview: The trailers show an example how not to do a DreamWorks Animation film such as poor fish puns, stunt casting and attempts to be relevant.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The film would have been better if Sykes was the protagonist instead of a side character.
- Took the Bad Film Seriously:
- Jack Black did some effort to voice Lenny so well that he got to voice in Kung Fu Panda as a reward.
- Angelina Jolie loved voicing Lola and it also helped her get ready to voice in Kung Fu Panda.
- Martin Scorsese isn't a voice actor but he did an outstanding job voicing Sykes.
- Uncanny Valley: While the sharks do not appear to be that bad, the fish have this very awkward combination of a human's face and a fish's body...
- Unfortunate Implications: Members of the Italian-American community were not happy with this movie.
- What Do You Mean It's for Kids?: It is a mix between The Godfather and SpongeBob SquarePants, which meshes underwater fun with gangster stories.
