ReTHAWed

reTHAWed is a community made expansive Game Mod for the Windows version of Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (THAW), first released in 2017 by 10K Rising.

In similar fashion to THUG Pro for Tony Hawk's Underground 2, the game builds on top of American Wasteland, providing quality-of-life improvements and expands the base game further with maps, characters and content from across the series up until Project 8, as well as reviving the now-defunct multiplayer component from the game with a community-led matchmaking service.

Unlike THUG Pro, however, reTHAWed allows players to play through the entire THAW story campaign, and starting with version 4.2, adds support for custom add-on content such as new skaters, decks and accessories for the create-a-skater character, in contrast to skater mods for THUG Pro where a pro skater—typically Chad Muska—had to be replaced with a different mesh.[1]

Tropes used in ReTHAWed include:
  • Acrofatic: This video of Tony Soprano earning the Thrasher Magazine Skater of The Year award, where a mod of The Sopranos protagonist is showcased performing tricks James Gandolfini wouldn't have done in RealLife.
  • Game Mod: Much like the more popular THUG Pro but with better add-on content support and the ability to play through the story campaign.
  • Guest Fighter: Nearly all characters from the Tony Hawk series are present, as well as those from other Neversoft franchises.
    • The upcoming 4.3.1 update adds characters from Postal 2 in an official collaboration with Running With Scissors themselves.
  • Intercontinuity Crossover / Massively Multiplayer Crossover: Much like THUG Pro and of course Guitar Hero World Tour: Definitive Edition, players are free to amass (or if they're skilled enough, port or create from scratch) characters from different franchises and fandoms as they so choose.
    • One Twitter user remarked about how one reTHAWed community member "uploaded the most out of left field custom skaters possible", even going so far as to bringing Maryellen Larkin from the American Girl doll line into the game.
  • No Swastikas: There was a submission over at the reTHAWed mod repo which ported the Hitler character model from Sniper Elite V2 but was deleted soon after as it violated the community guidelines. Similarly, mods pertaining to contentious subject matter such as those depicting contemporary politicians and most especially racist symbolism will be deleted without further notice.
  1. This led to an inside joke in the game's multiplayer mode where those who play as a modded character show up as Chad Muska to others in the session if they haven't downloaded the mod that one player is using. Content syncing between players was suggested at some point but this was ruled out due to security concerns.
