    The Firefox logo

Mozilla Firefox is a popular web browser that competes with Chrome and Safari. Firefox has an impressive history for an open source project borne from the battered corpse of Netscape after it was defeated by Explorer, and at one time was the second most popular browser in the world. Firefox maintains its own rendering engine, making it one of the three major browsers to do so along with Safari[1] and Chromium derived[2] browsers.

Mozilla Firefox, or just Firefox, was launched on November 9, 2004. Versions 2, 3, and 4 came out in 2006, 2008, and 2011 respectively. After 4 they changed the criteria for being a new version and they started to roll out faster. As of May 2025 138.0 is the official released version with several releases per year.

Firefox is mostly known for being hugely and relatively easily customizable through the use of add-ons and scripts.

    Firefox and Popular Culture

    • Mozilla engineers has been involved in a number of technological developments that could benefit Firefox, such as the early stages of the Rust programming language or WebVR, which later became WebXR. This would indirectly affect a number of works made with those technologies.
    • A scandal erupted in the late 2010s regarding an add on that was pushed to users designed to promote Mr. Robot. Given the nature of how it was distributed and the tendency for Firefox users of the time to be privacy or security conscious, users were not pleased.
