Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals is an online game set in the Marvel Universe featuring matches of 6 versus 6 in a mixture of Third-Person Shooter, Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), and Hero Shooter gameplay.

It was developed by the Chinese developer NetEase Games in partnership with Marvel Games and published in December 2024. It can be acquired from Steam here or Epic Games Store here for Microsoft Windows. It is also available for Xbox Series X and Series S here, and PlayStation 5 here.

Tropes used in Marvel Rivals include:
  • Bare Your Midriff: Part of the outfit for Squirrel Girl.
  • Big Applesauce: New York City is plagued by vampires.
  • Fan Service: Conspicuous amounts of it, at least as character design is concerned. Almost every female has a curvaceous body and clothes that seem to stick to the skin, including Galacta, the announcer, though it is still kind of modest in terms of skin showing.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Several female characters here; Squirrel Girl is usually the modest type in the comics, switching to short-shorts and a halter here.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Though all female characters are very pretty, Psylocke sticks out. Her default version, Sai of Demon Days, has only a small piece of cloth, a sarashi, covering her left breast in her default costume. One of her alternate costumes is the Leotard of Power that Kwannon wore when she died and was kept in use by Betsy Braddock after the latter was forcibly transferred to the first's body.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Jeff the Land Shark. Everyone - in universe and out - can't help but love the little guy.
  • Superheroes Wear Capes: Generally averted, but played straight with Doctor Strange who wears a prominent cape.
  • Licensed Game: Of the Marvel Universe.
  • Life Meter: The remaining Hit Points of the player character are displayed in a bar on the center of the bottom of the screen.
  • Microtransactions: The game is free to download, but players can purchase virtual currency in the form of lattice.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Used by Doctor Strange. His allies can also leverage the portals he makes.
  • Third-Person Seductress: The camera is focused on the rear of the player character such that their entire backside is visible, not just the upper portion as in some third person shooters.
