Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a light hearted racing game for the Nintendo Switch, released in its first year on the market in 2017. Part of the Mario Kart series, it served as an Updated Rerelease of the original Mario Kart 8 featuring a number of tweaks, with a substantial amount of new content being released since launch. Like the original, it focuses on karts and other small vehicles that dynamically transform, driving across roads, flying through the sky, and diving beneath the waters.

Has an official webpage on the Nintendo website here.

Tropes used in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe include:

  • Olive Garden: The track Rome Avanti in the Acorn Cup is The Theme Park Version of Rome with streets dotted with monuments, ruins, and vespas, along with going through the Colosseum itself.
  • Oktoberfest: Averted in the track Berlin Byways where The Theme Park Version of Berlin is focused on architecture such as the Brandenburg Gate and the remains of the Berlin Wall over typical stereotypes.
  • Product Placement: The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL is a playable kart, complete with a Mercedes logo on the kart and selection screen. The publication Car & Driver has a story on its earlier inclusion in the original Mario Kart 8.
  • Squashed Flat: Can happen if a character is crushed by a Thwomp.
  • The Theme Park Version: The locations based on real world cities are this, though they sometimes incorporate surprisingly realistic elements, like oil extraction in Los Angeles.
  • Tokyo Is the Center of the Universe: The track Tokyo Blur is the only Japanese city to receive representation. The track features a dense urban environment, with Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, and Mount Fuji all visible, among other icons of the city.
  • Toros Y Flamenco: The track Madrid Drive in the Spiny Cup is The Theme Park Version of Madrid, featuring churro shops, a wiggler taking siesta, and flamenco inspired music.
  • Updated Rerelease: The game itself as one for the original Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U.
    • Several tracks from earlier games in the series were remastered and brought back for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
  • Wacky Racing: Karts can glide, go underwater, and more. In general the racing values fun and Rule of Cool over realism, as is standard for a Mario Kart game.
