LEGO Island/Trivia

  • Christmas Rushed: The game was scheduled to be released in time for the 1997 holiday season, and as such the LEGO Island team had to crunch their way through; not helping matters was that since internet access was still not that common at the time, post-release patches were way out of the question leading to some bugs, some of which manifested on the long-term.[1]
  • Hey, It's That Voice!:
    • In the first game, Pepper is voiced by John Morris, the voice of Andy from the Toy Story trilogy.
    • The Brickster is voiced by David Lander who voiced Smart Ass in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.
    • Snapp Lockitt's voice actor is Doug Boyd, who is famous for doing various characters from Telltale Games, most notably Nelson Tethers.
    • In LEGO Island 2, Pepper sounds a lot like Buster.
    • Mama Brickolini is voiced very recognizably by the great June Foray.
  • In Memoriam: YouTuber and prominent LEGO Island fan MattKC dedicated his documentary about the game to the late Wes Jenkins who passed away in 2017.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: All of the games in the trilogy are no longer in circulation largely due to licensing and compatibility issues. LEGO themselves don't seem to mind fans sailing the seven seas to get their hands on the game, though.
  • Troubled Production: Besides the above-mentioned Christmas crunch, Mindscape fired the team who worked on the original project all in spite of the game having sold over seven million copies. The programmers and other staff were understandably pissed and filed a successful lawsuit against the company.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The first LEGO Island game was intended to be the first part in a six game series, with other games exploring the other islands and areas in the Phanta Sea. However, these were all scrapped. They weren't too far along in development though.
    • LEGO Island 2 was intended to be twice as big as what it really is. Due to its rushed production, however, much of it was scrapped and it became an Obvious Beta.

  1. Which was so significant that Microsoft themselves actually wrote compatibility shims for Windows XP specific to the games.
