- Complete Monster: Akai is one of the worst.
- He's Just Hiding: The final twist is so sudden and depressing, to not say lacking in logic that some fans prefer to believe it was just a dream.
- Moral Event Horizon: If he hadn't crossed this already, Akai is elevated squarely into Complete Monster status when it is revealed that not only has he been raping and brainwashing Sawa since she was a young teen, but he was also responsible for the murder of her parents in the first place!
- Overshadowed by Controversy: As you can see by the way it was released in North America, most people take issue with the sex scenes than with anything else on the plot, even saying it "ruins it", despite the fact it's very plot critical.
- Narm: The English dub for some fans is a fine example of unintentional hilarity, with Sawa's voice actress pronouncing "Oburi" as "Ovary" and "Kanie" like that guy who made Taylor Swift cry.
