Itch.io

The itch.io logotype.

itch.io is a website that is commonly used to distribute Indie Games. Unlike most online storefronts, itch.io is known for it's very low barrier to entry both for developers and for users. For consumers of games, many are free and in such cases don't require logging in to download. For developers the site acts as a free host for game projects with minimal requirements or barriers to entry. The site is also used for hosting game jams, user comments on games, and other content.

Tropes used in Itch.io include:
  • Allegedly Free Game: Generally averted, with the primary monetization model being either payment upfront or free to play.
  • Brand Names Are Better: Played with. Hardly any large companies publish on itch.io, and most of the users publishing there are smaller creators or indie operations with little to no brand recognition. Of course, even smaller names can carry cachet in the right circles.
  • Follow the Leader: Not the first Digital Distribution system aimed at Indie Developers, but one of the more successful ones.
  • Online Alias: Users can go by one, and frequently do.
  • We Sell Everything: If it's digital content, it can probably be sold over itch.io. Beyond just video games, such as software, tabletop games, books, comics, and music.
