F-Zero X

F-Zero X is a high speed 3D racing game released in 1998 by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It is the first fully 3D entry in the F-Zero series. Like other entries in the series, it features futuristic races conducted at several hundred kilometers per hour. This entry features a gritty aesthetic, complimented by a rock heavy soundtrack.
It later saw release on the Nintendo Switch as part of the Nintendo Switch Online service.
Tropes used in F-Zero X include:
- Attract Mode: If the player lingers on the title screen, some gameplay plays.
- Car Fu: It is possible to slam into other vehicles.
- Collision Damage: If the vehicle slams into the wall, it lowers the energy meter.
- Every Car Is a Pinto: Taking enough damage or falling off the track will result in the vehicle exploding.
- Lethal Lava Land: The track Fire Field features a daring jump over a field of lava.
- Level Map Display: Visible on the right hand side of the screen.
- Life Meter: Represented by the player’s energy bar.
- Loads and Loads of Characters: Visible on the title screen. There are 30 machines visible on the machine select screen, each with an associated character.
- Mega City: Mute City is a giant foggy or smoggy city.
- Ribcage Ridge: A huge horned skull is visible on the horizon in the course Devil's Forest.
- Port Town: Exists as a huge city named Port Town with massive cranes visible in the distance.
- Shifting Sand Land: The backdrop to Sand Ocean.
- Skybox: Visible in the background.
- Video Game 3D Leap: Was the first full leap to 3D for F-Zero.
