Drunkard's Walk/Trivia
Trivia about Drunkard's Walk includes:
- Doorstopper: Drunkard's Walk II is complete at just over 320k words, and Drunkard's Walk V is complete at just over 171k words. As of December 2024, Drunkard's Walk S, Drunkard's Walk VIII, and Drunkard's Walk XIII were still in progress: S at about 127k words in 4 chapters, VIII at 116.8k words in 4 chapters, and XIII at 23k words in one chapter. The other nine arcs do not have any published chapters as of December 2024, but there are five "Steplets" with 7.3k words between them. And none of these numbers include the various concordances or fan-written additions. So: one story in many arcs, over half of which are completely unpublished, with over 765k words so far in what has seen the light of day.
- History Marches On: A few examples, as the almost inevitable result of the series being written over many years. A case in point: In DW2, set in 2036 but written 1998-2003, Doug got a card for Blockbuster Video (which went of out of business in 2013).
- Homage: Occasional small ones, almost on the Shout-Out level.
- Line to God: The author is active on his forums.
- Recursive Fanfiction: Not only is the series itself Fanfic, it has inspired other fan writers to create their own Drunkard's Walk stories, including two "official" sequels.
- Drunkard's Walk XIII shows that at least one Recursive Fanfic has contributed to the canon: AI Eimi and the laptop that she inhabits were introduced in a fan-written story.
- Shout-Out: Numerous. Doug is a pop culture maven who isn't shy about tossing references and quotes around. Also subverted -- between the different worlds he visits, and the divergence of his own homeworld from other timelines, not all of his references make sense to everyone -- and vice versa.
- On the meta-level, Chapter 13 of DW2 includes cameos by Yumeko Asagiri of The Next Generation and Bert Van Vliet of The Bubblegum Zone.
- In chapter 15 of DW2, Doug notes, "'Skysaber Conquers The World' is on TV tonight."
- Stock Shout-Outs: By way of an introduction to the concept of operational security, Doug tells Sailor Moon, "The first rule of Sailor Club is you do not talk about Sailor Club."
- Technology Marches On: The first few chapters of DW2 were written in the late 90s, and it shows when Nene, in 2036, is impressed by the several thousand songs stored in Doug's helmet computer -- about the same amount most people had in their iPods back when iPods were still separate devices from iPhones. The author acknowledges this trope in a later note in the Concordance for DW2: "Go ahead, laugh at me."
- What Could Have Been: The author occasionally posts abandoned bits and pieces of stories in his forums.
- Word of God: Numerous sources, including the author's discussion forums and his website.
