Darwin's Soldiers/YMMV
- Angst? What Angst? - Zachary gives Shelton a very brief answer to his Stockholm Syndrome issues in the third RP.
Shelton: Damn it, he was right. I betrayed them, I never thought of it as betrayal, but I did. And now a bunch of them just died for me. I know they're the enemy, but they trusted me! |
- Badass Decay - Meta example. Dr. Keith Bailey from the rebooted Furtopia RP was just as capable with a firearm as any other character. In the Gang of Five RPs, he is pretty much incapable of fighting.
- Non Sequitur Scene - As Drs. Shelton and Zanasiu run away from the exploding Einstein-Rosen Bridge at the end of the first RP, a winged fox swoops down from the sky and flies them to safety. This moment is never spoken of again.
- Complete Monster - Professor Eclipse from the Furtopia RPs is an unrepentant sociopath whose main motivation for doing anything is For the Evulz.
- Creator's Pet - Dragore from the Furtopia RPs fits this trope perfectly. A Mary Sue and a scrappy with a big role, adored by the creator and steals the spotlight.
- Lupis from the rebooted Furtopia RP is even worse. He literally hijacks the entire story and the plot shifts from a focus on the terrorists to the rogue scientists, who were originally in the background.
- Critical Research Failure - Turning a wardrobe into antimatter would not result in it disintegrating. It would result in a massive explosion as the antiparticles of the wardrobe and the atoms of the air around it annihilate each other in a burst of gamma rays.
- This becomes a Voodoo Shark when the writers try to Hand Wave it by saying it was actually turned into antienergy, not antimatter. And thus completely ignoring what the problem was.
- Crowning Moment of Awesome - At least one per story/RP.
- Crowning Music of Awesome - None in the fic but several moments demand that you open up YouTube and blast Primo Victoria, Preliator, Schwarze Sonne or Danger Zone at full volume.
- Ethnic Scrappy - The Vulpine are a FantasyCounterpartCulture of American Indians. They also happen to be a racist amalgamation of Amerindian stereotypes, being depicted as alcoholic, sex-crazed savages, who live on poverty-ridden, filthy reservations.
- Evil Is Sexy - Subject 19 anyone? Well, the girl practically wears revealing clothes.
- Roux, the female Wolf dresses in extremely revealing clothing (namely a pair of nearly see-through thong panties and that is it).
- Fandom Heresy: There are several things that should not be contested with any of the players or fans.
- Praising Lupis or Dragore will end with you locked in the Pelvanida sublevels. These two characters are almost universally disliked among the players for their overpowered nature, constant wangsting, and tendency to steal the spotlight.
- Saying the Vulpine are a good addition to the setting will lead to your corpse getting dumped in a small New Mexico town's convenience store. The Vulpine are loathed by the practically all the players for being an Ethnic Scrappy as they're little more than a collection of negative Amerindian stereotypes, being depicted as alcoholic, sex-crazed savages, who live on poverty-ridden, filthy reservations.
- Calling Aydin a well-written character will get you punched out by Aimee. He's disliked by fans for being a flat character with little characterization beyond a for Aimee. The fact that he shares his creator's views doesn't help matters. In addition, he's intended to be seen as one of "good" Vulpine, which given the Fantasy Counterpart Culture nature of the Vulpine, comes off as racist, which again, is more fuel to the fire the fans will use to roast you with if you praise Aydin.
- Saying anything good about the Rebooted Furtopia RP will cause all the players and fans to hand you over to the rogue scientists as it's considered the worst of any Darwin's Soldiers work thanks to the out-of-place babyfur elements; the character of Lupis and his derailment of the plot via his plotline causing the overemphasis of the role of the rogue scientists and the subsequent effect of the roleplay completely ignoring the terrorist assault (which is what the entire RP was intended to be about). Even the creator of the RP dislikes it.
- Genius Bonus - there are some references that make little to no sense unless one has an understanding of science.
- Growing the Beard - Shelton in the third RP, literally and figuratively.
- God Mode Sue - Dragore from the Furtopia RPs is ludicrously powerful. Several times, he effortlessly slaughters a group of armed terrorists in mere seconds. Oh, by the way, Dragore is six years old!
- Ho Yay - During Lab 101's escape, Shelton and Kerzach squeeze into a single bathroom stall and cut their way through to the adjacent maintenance rooms. When it's time to leave back through the bathroom, there are people waiting for the bathroom.
Shelton: "What exactly are we going to tell them if they ask why both of us were in the bathroom for so long? I mean, I'm all for the new identity, but I doubt they'll believe we were so inspired by the Exodus that we declared our love for each other." |
- Roux and Aisha are a couple.
- Holy Shit Quotient - Quite high. Some parts of the RPs and stories get absolutely crazy.
- Moral Event Horizon - In James' mind, Siberys crossed it in Card of Ten when threatening a child's life to force the king to kill himself.
- Take That, Scrappy! - In Ground One Dragore (see below) gets a particularly horrendous Fate Worse Than Death: eaten alive by carnivorous atmosphere but prevented from dying by his nanobots. The endless pain drives him insane.
- The Scrappy:
- Dragore of the Furtopia RPs is utterly loathed by the majority of the players. His constant wangsting is annoying enough but the fact that he's overpowered cements his Scrappy status.
- Aydin Marcos from Disruptive Selection is a close contender for the "coveted" title of most "hated character". He's a flat character whose only defining trait is that he loves Aimee. Further annoying players is that he shares his creator's views and is written as a "good" member of the Vulpine, a Fantasy Counterpart Culture of modern day Native Americans that many players came to see as Ethnic Scrappies because many of their traits align with negative depictions of Amerindians.
- Lupis from the rebooted Furtopia RP shares the same obnoxious wangsty behavior and overpowered nature of Dragore but what particularly grates on a lot of players' nerves is the fact that he derailed the RP by pushing the secondary plot of rogue scientists into the forefront and sidelining the main plot about a terrorist attack.
- Strangled by the Red String - Of the four relationships consummated in the Culeston hotel, only Shelton/Shakila had any sort of foreshadowing.[1]
- Unfortunate Implications - The Vulpine are huge offenders. For starters, they are a Fantasy Counterpart Culture version of modern Native Americans all mashed together into an amalgam. They live in horrific conditions, alcoholism and severe poverty are rampant. Furthermore, most of the Vulpine are described as sex-crazed, "barely civilized savages" by Aydin. To top off this mess, Aydin (one of the two Vulpine main characters) is a speciesist who hates snakes and has no compunctions about attacking his allies if he feels that Aimee is in danger. Thankfully, this is somewhat cushioned by the fact that Aimee is a fairly sympathetic and rounded character.
- Wangst - Dragore from the Furtopia RPs constantly complains about being unloved.
- ↑ It was also ironically the only relationship that didn't work out
