Colin McRae Rally/Trivia

  • Author Existence Failure : Colin McRae died in a serious helicopter crash in September 2007. A tribute video in DiRT 2 was made in his memory.
  • Bad Export for You: In an interesting inversion of the NTSC-is-better convention with console games, the American and Japanese releases of 2.0 ran a bit slower than its PAL counterpart. Besides the speed difference, Nicky Grist's co-driving and narration was replaced by retired NASCAR driver and racing announcer Ned Jarrett.
  • Cast the Expert: Colin and Nicky lent their expertise throughout the games, while Nicky did serve as the default co-driver for most of the series. Colin's previous co-driver Derek Ringer replaced Grist as the default co-driver in 04 (likely due to a series of disagreements between Colin and Nicky in 2002 which led to their split from their collaboration) but Nicky's voice set is still available in the game as an option.
  • Non-Actor Vehicle: A number of gamers first heard of McRae from the video game series, especially in America where some thought that Colin was, in Nicky Grist's words, a "fictitious Scottish character".[1] Colin did lend his voice in the first game's tutorial section, but it left a lot to be desired as he was more of a sportsman than an actor; Colin basically left all of the voice acting to his co-drivers later on, instead mostly serving as the brand ambassador and technical consultant.
  • Same Language Dub: As mentioned above, Ned Jarrett filled in for Nicky Grist in the American release of 2.0.
  • What Could Have Been: A Dreamcast version of 2.0 was in development but was cancelled when the firm pulled out of Dreamcast development in late 2000.
  1. Given rally racing being far less popular in the States, this isn't surprising.
